Description

eBook-speaker 6.1.0 through 6.2.0 contains a stack buffer overflow vulnerability in get_attributes() in src/common.c caused by an unbounded strcpy of an element's name attribute. Attackers can craft an EPUB or DAISY book with a name attribute of 511 or more characters to corrupt the stack and crash the reader when opened.

Executive Summary

This is a stack buffer overflow in eBook-speaker versions 6.1.0 through 6.2.0. The vulnerability occurs in the get_attributes() function in src/common.c due to an unbounded strcpy operation that copies an element's name attribute without length checks. Attackers can exploit this by creating an EPUB or DAISY book with a name attribute of 511 or more characters, causing stack corruption and crashing the reader when opened.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of eBook-speaker. If it is between 6.1.0 and 6.2.0, the system is vulnerable. Run: ebook-speaker --version. Additionally, monitor for crashes when opening EPUB or DAISY files with long name attributes.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability allows attackers to crash the eBook-speaker application by opening a maliciously crafted EPUB or DAISY file. This could lead to denial-of-service conditions, preventing users from accessing their eBooks. If exploited further, it might enable arbitrary code execution, though this is not confirmed in the provided context.

Mitigation Strategies

Update eBook-speaker to a version beyond 6.2.0. If an update is unavailable, avoid opening untrusted EPUB or DAISY files. Implement input validation for name attributes in files. Restrict file access permissions.
