VRPN Stack-Based Buffer Overflow via Malicious Sender Message

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-123200, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

VRPN through 07.36 contains an out-of-bounds stack write vulnerability in vrpn_Endpoint::handle_sender_message() and handle_type_message() that allows unauthenticated remote peers to write outside a stack buffer via an unchecked length index. Attackers can connect, complete the version-cookie exchange, and send a SENDER_DESCRIPTION or TYPE_DESCRIPTION message with an out-of-range or negative index to crash the process.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-123200 is an out-of-bounds stack write vulnerability in VRPN (Virtual Reality Peripheral Network) versions up to 07.36. It occurs in functions handling network messages, specifically vrpn_Endpoint::handle_sender_message() and handle_type_message(). Attackers can exploit this by sending maliciously crafted SENDER_DESCRIPTION or TYPE_DESCRIPTION messages with invalid or negative length indices. This allows writing outside a stack buffer, potentially crashing the process or enabling arbitrary code execution.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires monitoring VRPN service logs for crashes or unusual network traffic. Check for processes named vrpn_Connection or similar using commands like 'ps aux | grep vrpn' or 'systemctl status vrpn'. Inspect network traffic for malformed SENDER_DESCRIPTION or TYPE_DESCRIPTION messages with tools like Wireshark or tcpdump filtering for VRPN protocol traffic.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows unauthenticated remote attackers to crash VRPN servers or clients by sending specially crafted network messages. If exploited successfully, it could lead to denial of service, system instability, or potentially arbitrary code execution on affected systems. Users running vulnerable VRPN versions should update immediately to mitigate risks.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update VRPN to version 07.39 or later, which includes the fix for out-of-bounds writes. If updating is not possible, restrict network access to VRPN services using firewalls or disable the service if unused. Monitor for crashes or unusual activity in VRPN processes as potential exploitation attempts.
