Description

The Church Admin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via the 'lat' parameter in all versions up to, and including, 5.1.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This vulnerability is only exploitable when a Google Maps API key has been configured in Church Admin settings, as the vulnerable sink is only reached when that option is present.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the Church Admin WordPress plugin versions up to 5.1.7. It allows unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts via the 'lat' parameter due to poor input sanitization and output escaping. The scripts execute when users access infected pages, but only if a Google Maps API key is configured in the plugin settings.

Detection Guidance

Check for the Church Admin plugin version 5.1.7 or below. Inspect the 'lat' parameter in plugin files for unusual or obfuscated code. Look for signs of tampered files like church-admin.php containing binary data or non-standard encoding.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user sessions, redirect to malicious sites, or deface your website. Since it requires a Google Maps API key to exploit, sites without this key are not vulnerable. The impact includes potential data breaches, loss of user trust, and unauthorized access to sensitive information.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited, as it compromises user data confidentiality and integrity.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Church Admin plugin to version 5.1.8 or later. Remove any Google Maps API key from Church Admin settings if present. Scan plugin files for malicious code and remove any unauthorized modifications.
