Description

Vikunja before 2.7.1 contains an insecure file permissions vulnerability that allows local users to read dump archives created with umask permissions by the vikunja dump command. Local attackers on a shared host can read the world-readable zip in the rootpath to obtain config, password hashes, TOTP secrets, tokens, and stored files.

Executive Summary

Vikunja before version 2.7.1 has an insecure file permissions vulnerability in its dump archive feature. When the vikunja dump command is executed, it creates a zip archive with overly permissive default settings, making the file world-readable. This allows local attackers on shared systems to access sensitive data within the archive.

Detection Guidance

Check for world-readable dump archives in Vikunja's root directory. Look for files created by the vikunja dump command with permissions 0644 or similar. Use commands like 'find / -type f -perm -044 -name "*.zip" 2>/dev/null' to locate potentially vulnerable archives.

Impact Analysis

Local attackers on a shared host can read the world-readable zip archive in the root directory to obtain sensitive information such as configuration files, password hashes, TOTP secrets, tokens, and stored files. This could lead to unauthorized access to user data and system credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data such as password hashes, tokens, and stored files, which may violate data protection requirements under GDPR and HIPAA. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance violations and potential legal consequences.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Vikunja to version 2.7.1 or later. If upgrading is not possible, manually set dump archive permissions to 0600 using chmod. Ensure the directory containing dump files is not world-readable. Review and restrict local user access to shared systems.
