Description

Vikunja before 2.7.1 contains a supply chain vulnerability in its mage release targets that fetch the xgo module and Docker image by mutable latest references. Attackers who compromise the upstream xgo module, image, or registry can inject malicious code into subsequently built release binaries shipped under a valid signature.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-123508 is a supply chain vulnerability in Vikunja versions before 2.7.1. It involves the use of mutable 'latest' references in the release toolchain (xgo) to fetch dependencies. Attackers who compromise the upstream xgo module, Docker image, or registry can inject malicious code into signed release binaries.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your Vikunja instance is running a version before 2.7.1. Run: vikunja version. If the version is below 2.7.1, it is vulnerable. Additionally, inspect the mage build files for mutable latest references in xgo module or Docker image pulls.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could lead to malicious code being executed under a valid signature. This means attackers could run unsigned code while appearing legitimate, potentially compromising systems running affected Vikunja versions.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Vikunja to version 2.7.1 or later immediately. Ensure the xgo module version is pinned and Docker images use fixed digests in your build process. Verify the integrity of all dependencies before building.
