Description

Vikunja from 0.23.0 before 2.7.1 contains an information disclosure vulnerability that allows project collaborators with write access to read tasks from inaccessible projects by registering webhooks. Because webhook payloads are built with the triggering user's permissions, attackers receive related_tasks titles, descriptions and metadata from private projects whenever another user modifies a linked task.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects Vikunja versions 0.23.0 through 2.7.0. It allows project collaborators with write access to read tasks from private projects by registering webhooks. Webhook payloads are built using the triggering user's permissions, exposing task titles, descriptions, and metadata from inaccessible projects when another user modifies a linked task.

Detection Guidance
  • Check Vikunja version to confirm if it is between 0.23.0 and 2.7.0. Run: vikunja version or check the installed package version.
  • Review webhook configurations in Vikunja admin panel for unauthorized or suspicious webhooks.
  • Inspect network traffic for outgoing webhook payloads to unknown or external URLs.
  • Audit project collaborators with write access and verify their permissions are appropriate.
Impact Analysis

An attacker with write access to a shared project could exploit this to access sensitive task details from private projects. This includes titles, descriptions, and metadata, potentially leading to unauthorized data exposure or information leaks.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating compliance requirements for data protection such as GDPR or HIPAA. Unauthorized exposure of task details may result in regulatory penalties or breaches of confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade Vikunja to version 2.7.1 or later to patch the vulnerability.
  • Remove any unauthorized or suspicious webhooks from the Vikunja admin panel.
  • Review and restrict write access permissions for project collaborators.
  • Monitor webhook logs for unusual activity or data exfiltration.
