Description

Vikunja from 1.0.0 before 2.7.1 contains an uncontrolled resource consumption vulnerability that allows authenticated users to bypass service.maxitemsperpage by sending page=0 to /api/v1 list endpoints. Attackers can self-register and repeatedly request page=0 to force unbounded SQL queries, memory materialisation, and per-row query fan-out, degrading availability for other users.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in Vikunja (versions 1.0.0 to 2.7.0) allows authenticated users to bypass pagination limits by sending page=0 to list endpoints. This causes the server to return all results without pagination, leading to uncontrolled resource consumption including unbounded SQL queries, excessive memory usage, and degraded system availability for other users.

Detection Guidance

Monitor for repeated requests to /api/v1 endpoints with page=0 parameter. Check server logs for high CPU/memory usage during normal operation. Use network traffic analysis tools to detect unusual query patterns or large data transfers from authenticated users.

Impact Analysis

An attacker can exploit this by registering an account and repeatedly requesting page=0, forcing the server to process large amounts of data. This can cause high CPU and memory usage, slow down the system for all users, and potentially crash the service. Confidentiality and integrity of data are not affected as users can only access their authorized projects.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability primarily impacts availability, which could lead to service disruptions. While it does not directly affect confidentiality or integrity, prolonged unavailability may violate compliance requirements for uptime and accessibility in standards like GDPR or HIPAA. Organizations should patch this to maintain service reliability and compliance.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Vikunja to version 2.7.1 or later. If immediate upgrade isn't possible, implement network-level rate limiting for /api/v1 endpoints and block page=0 requests at the web server level. Disable self-registration if not required to prevent unauthenticated exploitation.
