Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a denial of service issue in hickory-dns versions 0.20.1 to 0.26.2. It occurs in the SVCB and HTTPS record parser where attackers can crash the parsing process by supplying untrusted zone files with single or double quotes replacing service parameter values, causing a panic.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability can be detected by checking the version of hickory-dns in use. If your system is running a version between 0.20.1 and 0.26.1, it is vulnerable. Use commands like 'cargo list --package hickory-proto' for Rust-based installations or check package managers for version details.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability can cause service disruption by crashing the DNS parsing process. If exploited, it may lead to DNS resolution failures, degraded network performance, or complete outages for systems relying on hickory-dns for DNS services.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade hickory-dns to version 0.26.2 or later. If using Rust, run 'cargo update -p hickory-proto'. For system packages, update via your package manager. Ensure all DNS services using hickory-dns are restarted after the update.
