Description

The DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) server in hickory-server (hickory-dns) before 0.26.2 does not apply any timeout when reading a request message from a QUIC stream, bypassing all configured timeouts. A remote unauthenticated client can open a connection and a request stream and hold it open indefinitely, consuming server resources and causing a denial of service.

Executive Summary

The vulnerability is in the DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) server component of hickory-server (hickory-dns) versions before 0.26.2. It fails to enforce timeouts when reading request messages from QUIC streams, allowing unauthenticated remote clients to indefinitely hold open connections and streams. This consumes server resources and causes a denial of service.

Impact Analysis

If you run a vulnerable hickory-server instance, attackers can exploit this to exhaust server resources by keeping connections open indefinitely. This leads to degraded performance or complete service unavailability for legitimate users.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade hickory-server (hickory-dns) to version 0.26.2 or later to address the missing timeout issue in DNS-over-QUIC (DoQ) server.
