Description

Fraunhofer HHI VVdeC before 3.2.1 contains a heap use-after-free vulnerability in DecLibRecon::createSubPicRefBufs because decompressPicture clears m_subPicExtTasks without waiting for pending tasks. Attackers can supply a crafted multi-subpicture VVC bitstream to decoders using two or more threads, causing heap memory corruption or a decoder crash.

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a heap use-after-free issue in Fraunhofer HHI VVdeC before version 3.2.1. It occurs when decompressPicture clears m_subPicExtTasks without waiting for pending tasks, leading to heap memory corruption or a decoder crash. Attackers can exploit this by providing a specially crafted multi-subpicture VVC bitstream to decoders using two or more threads.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking the version of Fraunhofer HHI VVdeC installed on your system. Use the command 'vvdec --version' to verify if the version is below 3.2.1. If the version is older, the system is vulnerable.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could cause a decoder crash or heap memory corruption. This may lead to denial-of-service conditions, application instability, or potential arbitrary code execution depending on the context in which the decoder is used.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Fraunhofer HHI VVdeC to version 3.2.1 or later. Disable multi-threaded decoding if possible until the update is applied. Avoid processing untrusted multi-subpicture VVC bitstreams until the patch is installed.
