Description

Treeio through 2.0 contains an insecure deserialization vulnerability in UpdateRecord.get_format_strings and ModuleSetting.loads that allows staff users to execute code via unverified pickle data. Attackers can store a crafted base64 pickle payload in an UpdateRecord format_strings field through the Django admin, executing Python code as the web server user when news feeds render.

Executive Summary

Treeio through version 2.0 has an insecure deserialization flaw in the UpdateRecord.get_format_strings and ModuleSetting.loads functions. This allows staff users to execute arbitrary code by injecting unverified pickle data. Attackers can exploit this by storing a crafted base64 pickle payload in the UpdateRecord format_strings field via the Django admin interface. When news feeds render, the payload executes Python code as the web server user.

Detection Guidance

Check for suspicious UpdateRecord entries in the Django admin interface with base64-encoded pickle payloads in the format_strings field. Monitor web server logs for unexpected Python code execution or unusual module loading activities.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers with staff access to execute arbitrary code on the server running Treeio. This could lead to full system compromise, data theft, unauthorized modifications, or disruption of services. The impact depends on the server's permissions and the attacker's goals.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Organizations using Treeio may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Treeio to a patched version if available. Restrict staff user access to the Django admin interface. Review and remove any suspicious UpdateRecord entries. Disable pickle deserialization in affected modules if possible.
