Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a path traversal flaw in DataLinkDC Dinky up to version 1.2.5. It exists in the file CatalogueController.java within the Catalogue Upload component. The issue allows remote attackers to manipulate the filename argument in the file.getOriginalFilename function, enabling unauthorized access to files outside intended directories.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to read sensitive files on the server, potentially accessing confidential data, configuration files, or other restricted resources. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized information disclosure, or further system compromise depending on the server's configuration.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) by enabling unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data. Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and regulatory scrutiny if such breaches occur due to inadequate security measures.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade DataLinkDC Dinky to a version beyond 1.2.5 where the path traversal flaw in CatalogueController.java has been patched. If an upgrade is not immediately possible, restrict access to the Catalogue Upload component and monitor for suspicious file upload activities.
