Executive Summary

This is a broken access control vulnerability in the Frappe Framework where authenticated users can query File list or report views to access metadata of private files they are not authorized to see. The flaw exists in versions before 15.121.1 and 16.x before 16.35.0 due to incorrect authorization checks.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check your Frappe Framework version. If using Frappe versions before 15.121.1 or 16.x before 16.35.0, the system is vulnerable. Run commands like 'bench version' in your Frappe environment to check the installed version.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with authenticated access could view sensitive file metadata they should not have permission to see. This could include filenames, sizes, or other details that reveal information about restricted files in the system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability exposes private file metadata to unauthorized authenticated users, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. This may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (protected health information) by failing to ensure proper access controls and data confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Frappe Framework to version 15.121.1 or 16.35.0 (or later). No workarounds exist, so updating is the only mitigation. Verify the update by checking the version again after applying the patch.
