Description

OpenEMR before 8.3.0 contains a stored cross-site scripting vulnerability that allows authenticated users with CAMOS access to inject HTML by saving malicious CAMOS content through ajax_save.php. Attackers can store a script payload that executes unencoded when the entry is printed via the non-print_html branch of rx_print.php, performing actions and reading data as the victim user.

Executive Summary

This is a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability in OpenEMR versions before 8.3.0. An authenticated user with CAMOS access can inject malicious HTML content into a CAMOS entry via ajax_save.php. When this entry is printed through the non-print_html branch of rx_print.php, the stored HTML executes without encoding, allowing the attacker to perform actions and access data as the victim user.

Detection Guidance

Check OpenEMR version with: grep -r "openemr" /var/www/html/openemr/version.php. If version is below 8.3.0, the system is vulnerable. Inspect CAMOS entries in the database for unencoded HTML or script tags. Monitor network traffic for unauthorized POST requests to ajax_save.php or rx_print.php.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal session cookies, perform actions on your behalf, access sensitive data, or send authenticated requests to OpenEMR endpoints. This could lead to unauthorized data access, modification, or other malicious activities within the OpenEMR system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to protected health information (PHI), violating HIPAA compliance. It may also result in data breaches, which could impact GDPR compliance due to unauthorized data exposure and potential loss of user trust.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade OpenEMR to version 8.3.0 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict CAMOS access to trusted users only. Implement input validation for CAMOS entries to block HTML/script injection. Enable output encoding in rx_print.php to ensure all content is properly escaped before rendering.
