Executive Summary

ClassroomIO through version 1.0.0 has an authorization bypass flaw. Authenticated users can clone courses belonging to other organizations by exploiting the POST /course/:courseId/clone endpoint. Attackers only need to know a target course ID to copy its content, including sections, lessons, exercises, and quiz answers, into their own organization.

Detection Guidance

Check for unauthorized POST requests to /course/:courseId/clone endpoints in your web server logs. Monitor for unusual course cloning activity between different organizations or tenants.

Impact Analysis

If you use ClassroomIO, attackers could steal your private course content by cloning it into their own organization. This exposes sensitive educational materials, proprietary exercises, or quiz answer keys to unauthorized parties. Organizations may face reputational damage or loss of intellectual property.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by exposing private course content, including sensitive educational materials and quiz answer keys, to unauthorized users. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding health-related information. Unauthorized access to such content violates these standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Implement proper authorization checks on the POST /course/:courseId/clone endpoint to ensure users can only clone courses within their own organization. Update ClassroomIO to the latest version if a patch is available.
