Executive Summary

Webmin versions up to 2.670 have a stored cross-site scripting (XSS) flaw in the Shorewall and Shorewall6 modules. The issue is in list.cgi where table fields and COMMENT lines are not properly escaped. Authenticated users with table edit rights can inject JavaScript via savecmt.cgi or table entries. This script executes when other users, including administrators, view the list page.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect Webmin's Shorewall and Shorewall6 modules for unescaped JavaScript in table fields or COMMENT lines. Check savecmt.cgi and list.cgi for stored XSS payloads. Review user permissions for table edit access.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with edit permissions could inject malicious scripts that run in the context of other users' browsers. This could lead to session hijacking, unauthorized actions on behalf of users, or theft of sensitive data like credentials. Even users with minimal privileges could be affected if they view compromised pages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or data breaches, violating GDPR's integrity and confidentiality principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance violations, fines, or reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Webmin to a version beyond 2.670. Remove or restrict edit permissions for users in Shorewall modules. Sanitize input fields and escape output in list.cgi and savecmt.cgi. Monitor for suspicious JavaScript execution in module pages.
