Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a local privilege escalation flaw in INFINITT PACS. It involves two executable files, SmartUpdate.exe and SmartExecute.exe, which process a file named execlist.txt during application updates. The execlist.txt file is world-writable, meaning any local low-privileged user can modify it. An attacker can alter this file to include arbitrary commands, which will then be executed with administrator privileges when the application updates.

Detection Guidance

Check for the presence of world-writable execlist.txt files in directories where SmartUpdate.exe or SmartExecute.exe are installed. Search for unusual command entries in these files that may indicate tampering. Verify file permissions on these executables and manifest files to ensure they are not writable by low-privileged users.

Impact Analysis

If you use INFINITT PACS, an attacker with local access to your system could exploit this flaw to gain full administrative control. This could allow them to install malware, steal sensitive data, or perform other malicious actions on your system without your knowledge.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to patient data, violating HIPAA requirements for protecting health information. It may also compromise data integrity and confidentiality, which are key aspects of GDPR compliance. Exploitation could result in regulatory penalties due to non-compliance with security standards.

Mitigation Strategies

Remove write permissions from execlist.txt and restrict access to directories containing SmartUpdate.exe and SmartExecute.exe. Monitor these files for unauthorized changes. Consider disabling automatic updates until a patch is available or implementing application whitelisting to prevent unauthorized command execution.
