Description

The All In One Login WordPress plugin before 2.5.0 does not adequately restrict the number of attempts that can be made against the short numeric code used by its default-enabled passwordless email login, and does not feed those failed attempts into its own brute-force protection, allowing unauthenticated attackers to take over any account including administrators.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects the All In One Login WordPress plugin versions 2.4.0 to 2.4.1. It allows unauthenticated attackers to take over any account, including administrators, by exploiting a lack of restrictions on brute-forcing the email OTP used for passwordless login. The plugin does not limit attempts to guess the short numeric code and does not integrate these failures into its brute-force protection.

Detection Guidance

Check if the All In One Login WordPress plugin is installed and verify its version. If it is between 2.4.0 and 2.4.1, the system is vulnerable. Look for unusual login attempts or failed brute-force attempts targeting the email OTP mechanism.

Impact Analysis

Attackers can gain full control of any account, including admin accounts, without authentication. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, website manipulation, or complete takeover of the WordPress site.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data, violating GDPR and HIPAA requirements for data protection and access control. Organizations may face compliance penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the All In One Login plugin to version 2.5.0 or later immediately. If updating is not possible, disable the plugin until the update can be applied. Monitor login attempts for suspicious activity.
