Out of Bounds Read in Modem Leads to DoS

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-20594, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-02

Last updated on: 2026-11-02

Assigner: MediaTek, Inc.

Description

In Modem, there is a possible out of bounds read due to a missing bounds check. This could lead to remote denial of service, if a UE has connected to a rogue base station controlled by the attacker, with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation. Patch ID: MOLY01349680 / MOLY01369097; Issue ID: MSV-9364.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a missing bounds check in Modem that causes a possible out of bounds read. It allows remote denial of service if a user equipment connects to a malicious base station controlled by an attacker. No additional privileges or user interaction are required for exploitation.

Detection Guidance

Detection of this vulnerability requires monitoring for out-of-bounds reads in MediaTek chipset modems. Check for crashes or abnormal behavior in modem processes. Use network monitoring tools to detect rogue base stations attempting to exploit this issue.

Impact Analysis

The vulnerability could allow an attacker to cause a denial of service on affected devices by exploiting a missing bounds check in the Modem component. This could disrupt normal device operations if a rogue base station is used.

Compliance Impact

The provided CVE data does not specify direct impacts on compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, or other standards. The vulnerability involves a potential out-of-bounds read in Modem leading to remote denial of service under specific conditions. Without explicit details on data exposure or privacy implications, its compliance impact remains unclear.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the provided patches (MOLY01349680 or MOLY01369097) to address the missing bounds check in Modem. Ensure your MediaTek chipset devices are updated to the latest firmware version.
