Description

VitaFit cloud API before 2026-10-30 contained an improper access control vulnerability in its Cognito-issued AWS role that allows authenticated attackers to perform s3:PutObject operations across the entire shared bucket instead of being restricted to their own folder. Attackers can overwrite other users' objects in the shared S3 bucket using credentials obtained via CVE-2026-54378, destroying original content without triggering deletion protections.

Executive Summary

The VitaFit cloud API before 2026-10-30 had an improper access control flaw in its Cognito-issued AWS role. This allowed authenticated attackers to perform s3:PutObject operations across the entire shared S3 bucket instead of being restricted to their own folder. Attackers could overwrite other users' objects in the shared bucket using credentials obtained via CVE-2026-54378, destroying original content without triggering deletion protections.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this vulnerability requires checking for unauthorized s3:PutObject operations in the shared VitaFit S3 bucket. Monitor AWS CloudTrail logs for unusual PUT operations outside user-specific folders. Use AWS CLI commands like 'aws s3api list-objects' to inspect bucket contents and 'aws cloudtrail lookup-events' to search for suspicious API calls.

Impact Analysis

If you use the VitaFit cloud service, attackers could overwrite your data in the shared S3 bucket, leading to loss of important files or configurations. This could disrupt your operations, corrupt data, or cause service outages if critical files are affected.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data modification or destruction, violating integrity requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. It may result in non-compliance due to potential loss of personal or sensitive data, triggering reporting obligations and penalties under these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately revoke the compromised Cognito-issued AWS role credentials obtained via CVE-2026-54378. Restrict s3:PutObject permissions in the shared bucket policy to enforce folder-level access only. Update the VitaFit cloud API to version 2026-10-30 or later to patch the improper access control issue.
