Use After Free in Linux Kernel DMA-BUF Subsystem

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-58827, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-02

Last updated on: 2026-11-02

Assigner: Android (associated with Google Inc. or Open Handset Alliance)

Description

In multiple functions of dma-buf.c, there is a possible use after free due to a race condition. This could lead to local escalation of privilege with no additional execution privileges needed. User interaction is not needed for exploitation.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-416 The product reuses or references memory after it has been freed. At some point afterward, the memory may be allocated again and saved in another pointer, while the original pointer references a location somewhere within the new allocation. Any operations using the original pointer are no longer valid because the memory "belongs" to the code that operates on the new pointer.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a use-after-free issue in the Linux kernel's DMA-BUF subsystem caused by a race condition during process forking. When a child process is created, it may not properly inherit DMA-BUF references from the parent due to conditions like madvise(MADV_DONTFORK) or race conditions in file descriptor handling. This leads to incorrect accounting of DMA-BUF references, potentially causing a use-after-free in the dup_dma_buf_info function.

Detection Guidance

This vulnerability is specific to the Android kernel's DMA-BUF subsystem and requires kernel-level inspection. Detection involves checking for the presence of the vulnerable code paths or confirming the application of the fix. Commands like 'uname -a' can show kernel version, but detailed detection requires analyzing kernel source or logs for the described race conditions in dma-buf.c.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows a local attacker to escalate privileges without needing additional execution privileges or user interaction. It could be exploited to execute arbitrary code, gain elevated access, or cause system instability by triggering a use-after-free condition in the kernel.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the provided kernel patches from Google's Android kernel repository (commits 769fa413e80cca30ff767f6f3e18f920d0353f67 and 6642375b48bea1fc287a9281db591a8edc74db79) to fix the use-after-free issue in the DMA-BUF subsystem. Ensure your Android device or system is updated to the latest kernel version containing these fixes.
