Description

A Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability exists in the EVS HAL, allowing a privileged client to free a `buffer_handle_t` while the producer thread is still using it. This race condition, triggered via `doneWithFrame` and `setMaxFramesInFlight`, enables an attacker to manipulate freed heap memory, potentially leading to the leakage of file descriptors from the EVS HAL process.

Executive Summary

This is a Use-After-Free (UAF) vulnerability in the EVS HAL component. A privileged client can free a buffer_handle_t object while the producer thread is still using it. This race condition occurs through functions like doneWithFrame and setMaxFramesInFlight, allowing an attacker to manipulate freed heap memory. The attacker could potentially leak file descriptors from the EVS HAL process.

Detection Guidance

I don't know

Detection requires analyzing EVS HAL logs and memory usage patterns. Monitor for crashes or heap corruption in processes interacting with EVS HAL. Check for repeated calls to doneWithFrame and setMaxFramesInFlight with mismatched buffer states.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with sufficient privileges could exploit this to manipulate system memory, potentially causing crashes, data corruption, or unauthorized access to sensitive information like file descriptors. This may lead to further system compromise or information disclosure.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply vendor patches or updates addressing the UAF in EVS HAL. Restrict access to privileged clients interacting with buffer_handle_t. Monitor for anomalous file descriptor leaks in EVS HAL processes.
