Package Validation Flaw in SystemUI Enables UI Spoofing

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-58930, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-02

Last updated on: 2026-11-02

Assigner: Android (associated with Google Inc. or Open Handset Alliance)

Description

An unprivileged application can exploit a lack of package/signature validation in SystemUI's `RemoteQCController` when resolving a hardcoded `content://` URI. This allows the attacker to squat on a specific authority if the legitimate package is absent, inject spoofed UI elements into the trusted SystemUI Quick Controls panel, and gain a Background Activity Launch (BAL) grant from SystemUI when the user interacts with the spoofed element.

Executive Summary

An unprivileged app can exploit missing package or signature validation in SystemUI's RemoteQCController when handling a hardcoded content:// URI. This lets the attacker claim a specific authority if the legitimate package is not installed, inject fake UI elements into the trusted SystemUI Quick Controls panel, and potentially gain Background Activity Launch rights when the user interacts with the spoofed element.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick you into interacting with fake UI elements in the system panel, potentially leading to unauthorized actions or granting the attacker elevated permissions like Background Activity Launch when you click the spoofed element.

Mitigation Strategies

Apply the latest Android security updates to patch SystemUI's RemoteQCController. Monitor for unauthorized UI elements in the Quick Controls panel and restrict unprivileged applications from accessing content:// URIs.
