Description

SuiteCRM is an open-source, enterprise-ready Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software application. Prior to 7.15.2 and 8.10.2, the get_end_date action in Projects Controller concatenates an authenticated caller's task_id value into a SQL query without parameterization. A low-privileged user can use blind SQL injection to enumerate the database schema and extract credentials, customer records, and other database contents. This issue is fixed in versions 7.15.2 and 8.10.2.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

SuiteCRM versions before 7.15.2 and 8.10.2 have a SQL injection vulnerability in the get_end_date action of the Projects Controller. The task_id parameter is concatenated directly into a SQL query without proper sanitization or parameterization. This allows authenticated low-privileged users to inject malicious SQL code and extract sensitive data from the database.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check if your SuiteCRM instance is running versions 7.15.1 or below, or 8.10.1 or below. Review logs for suspicious SQL query patterns or blind SQL injection attempts in the Projects Controller's get_end_date action. Use tools like SQLMap to test for SQL injection vulnerabilities in the task_id parameter.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with valid but low-privileged credentials could exploit this to enumerate the database schema, extract user credentials, access customer records, or perform full database dumps. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to sensitive information, and potential system compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and exposure of personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using vulnerable versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade SuiteCRM to versions 7.15.2 or 8.10.2 or later. If upgrading is not possible, apply input validation and parameterized queries to the task_id parameter in the get_end_date action. Restrict database access for SuiteCRM users and monitor for unusual database queries or access patterns.
