Description

FreeScout is a self-hosted help desk and shared mailbox. Prior to 1.8.225, the administrative tools.php maintenance endpoint is reachable without an appropriate authentication or access-control boundary. Response differences for attacker-controlled path values disclose whether arbitrary directories and files exist on the server. The same endpoint validates application-key and database-password candidates without rate limiting, per-session throttling, or a CAPTCHA, allowing unrestricted guessing attempts against application secrets. This issue is fixed in version 1.8.225.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability affects FreeScout versions before 1.8.225. The administrative tools.php endpoint is accessible without proper authentication, allowing attackers to check for arbitrary files and directories on the server by observing response differences. It also permits unrestricted brute-force attempts against application secrets like the App Key and database password due to missing rate limiting or throttling.

Detection Guidance

Check if the tools.php endpoint is accessible without authentication by sending a request to /tools.php on your FreeScout installation. Look for differences in responses when testing for arbitrary file or directory paths. Monitor for unusual brute-force attempts against application secrets via the same endpoint.

Impact Analysis

Attackers could exploit this to enumerate sensitive files on your server, potentially exposing confidential data. They might also brute-force secrets like database passwords or application keys, leading to unauthorized access to your FreeScout instance and data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeScout to version 1.8.225 or later. Restrict access to the tools.php endpoint using web server allow-lists or require authentication. Implement rate limiting for secret-validation requests to prevent brute-force attacks.
