RealtimeConvNewThread Privilege Escalation in FreeScout

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-62852, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-06

Last updated on: 2026-11-06

Assigner: GitHub, Inc.

Description

FreeScout is a self-hosted help desk and shared mailbox. Prior to 1.8.226, RealtimeConvNewThread checks only general mailbox access and does not apply the conversation-level restriction for users configured to see only assigned conversations. A restricted authenticated user can subscribe to predictable conv.<conversation_id> Polycast channels for other conversations in the same mailbox. New event payloads can expose complete replies, internal notes, recipient addresses, conversation state, assignee data, attachment names, and attachment URLs containing valid download tokens. This issue is fixed in version 1.8.226.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability in FreeScout versions before 1.8.226 involves missing authorization checks in realtime Polycast event handling. Specifically, the RealtimeConvNewThread event fails to enforce conversation-level access controls. An authenticated user with restricted access can subscribe to predictable conversation channels and intercept realtime updates for conversations they are not authorized to view.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check FreeScout versions before 1.8.226. Inspect Polycast channel subscriptions for predictable conv.<conversation_id> patterns. Monitor realtime event logs for unauthorized access attempts to conversations outside assigned permissions.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with a low-privileged account can access sensitive data from conversations they should not see. This includes complete replies, internal notes, recipient addresses, conversation state, assignee data, attachment names, and download URLs. The attack can be automated by guessing conversation IDs and may allow ongoing surveillance of conversations for up to two minutes.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive personal data, internal notes, and attachments. For GDPR, this may violate principles of data minimization and security. For HIPAA, it could expose protected health information. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance violations and potential regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeScout to version 1.8.226 or later immediately. Apply conversation-level authorization checks for realtime events. Restrict Polycast channel access to authorized users only. Review logs for past unauthorized access attempts.
