Description

FreeScout is a self-hosted help desk and shared mailbox. Prior to 1.8.225, the administrator-only App Logs viewer accepts Laravel-encrypted folder and file parameters whose constructed path is checked only as a raw string. An administrator who also knows the APP_KEY can supply traversal segments that the filesystem normalizes outside storage/logs. The /app-logs/app route can then read local files accessible to the PHP worker, including environment files, source files, credentials, tokens, and operating-system files. This issue is fixed in version 1.8.225.

CWE ID Description
CWE-23 The product uses external input to construct a pathname that should be within a restricted directory, but it does not properly neutralize sequences such as ".." that can resolve to a location that is outside of that directory.

Executive Summary

This is a path traversal vulnerability in FreeScout's App Logs viewer. An administrator with access to the /app-logs/app route can exploit Laravel-encrypted folder and file parameters to read arbitrary local files outside the intended logs directory. The issue occurs because path normalization is not properly enforced after decryption, allowing traversal sequences to access sensitive files like environment files, source code, or system files.

Detection Guidance

Check FreeScout version with: grep -r "version" /path/to/freescout/config/app.php. If version is below 1.8.225, the system is vulnerable. Inspect web server access logs for suspicious requests to /app-logs/app with path traversal sequences like ../ or encoded slashes.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with admin access and knowledge of the APP_KEY could read sensitive files on the server, including credentials, tokens, configuration files, or application source code. This could lead to further compromise of the system or data breaches depending on file permissions.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeScout to version 1.8.225 or later immediately. Review and restrict access to the /app-logs/app route to trusted administrators only. Rotate APP_KEY and all exposed credentials if the key was accessible.
