Description

SuiteCRM is an open-source, enterprise-ready Customer Relationship Management (CRM) software application. Prior to 7.15.2 and 8.10.2, legacy REST methods append an authenticated caller's query parameter as a SQL WHERE clause after insufficient structural validation. The affected flow begins at /service/v4_1/rest.php and uses get_entry_list, get_entries_count, and query to carry attacker-controlled data or authorization state into the security-sensitive operation. An account with list permission on a module can bypass the user_hash filter, retrieve password hashes and other database data, and use recovered administrative credentials to compromise the application. This issue is fixed in versions 7.15.2 and 8.10.2.

Exploitability

CWE ID Description
CWE-943 The product generates a query intended to access or manipulate data in a data store such as a database, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that can modify the intended logic of the query.
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

SuiteCRM versions before 7.15.2 and 8.10.2 contain a SQL injection flaw in legacy REST API methods like get_entry_list and get_entries_count. Attackers with valid accounts and list permissions can inject malicious SQL via query parameters, bypassing security filters to access sensitive data such as password hashes. This can lead to full system compromise if administrative credentials are recovered.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check SuiteCRM versions for 7.15.2 or 8.10.2 or later. Inspect API logs for suspicious requests to /service/v4_1/rest.php with methods like get_entry_list or get_entries_count. Look for unusual SQL query patterns or unauthorized data access attempts in logs.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could steal user and administrator password hashes, gain unauthorized access to sensitive data, or take control of the entire SuiteCRM application. This requires only a valid account with minimal permissions, making it dangerous for organizations using vulnerable versions.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations may face compliance breaches, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately upgrade SuiteCRM to versions 7.15.2 or 8.10.2 or later. Ensure all users with API access have minimal required permissions. Review and restrict list ACL permissions on modules. Monitor API endpoints for unauthorized access attempts.
