Description

Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in Apache Juneau. The REST server accepts a "content" query parameter that replaces the request body, and this is enabled by default on every HTTP method, including GET. A cross-site link can therefore deliver an attacker-chosen request body to an endpoint without a CORS preflight, defeating protections that rely on the HTTP method or content type instead of an anti-CSRF token. This issue affects Apache Juneau: through 9.2.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 9.2.1, which fixes the issue. Applications that do not use the content parameter can also set disableContentParam to true.

Executive Summary

This is a Cross-Site Request Forgery (CSRF) vulnerability in Apache Juneau. The REST server accepts a 'content' query parameter that replaces the request body by default on every HTTP method, including GET. This allows an attacker to deliver a malicious request body via a cross-site link without triggering CORS preflight checks, bypassing protections that rely on HTTP method or content type instead of an anti-CSRF token.

Detection Guidance

To detect this CSRF vulnerability in Apache Juneau, check if the 'content' query parameter is enabled in REST server configurations. Inspect HTTP requests for unusual GET requests with body content or POST requests bypassing CORS preflight. Review server logs for endpoints accepting query parameters as request bodies.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could trick a user into clicking a malicious link, causing the user's browser to send unauthorized requests to the vulnerable Apache Juneau server. This could lead to data theft, unauthorized actions, or manipulation of server responses without the user's knowledge or consent.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using Apache Juneau may face compliance violations if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Juneau to version 9.2.1 or later. If upgrading is not possible, set the disableContentParam configuration option to true in your application.
