Insufficiently Protected Credentials in Apache Juneau

Last updated on: 2026-11-05

Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

Insufficiently Protected Credentials vulnerability in Apache Juneau. The Apache Juneau RestClient followed HTTP redirects while keeping credential headers from the original request, so a server that redirected the client to a different host or port, or from HTTPS to HTTP, could receive headers such as Authorization, Cookie, Proxy-Authorization and X-API-Key. This issue affects Apache Juneau: through 9.2.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 9.2.1, which fixes the issue. The fix applies to HTTP clients created by the RestClient builder; applications that supply their own HttpClient must disable automatic redirects or strip credential headers on cross-origin redirects themselves.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability involves Apache Juneau's RestClient not properly protecting credentials during HTTP redirects. When the client follows a redirect to a different host, port, or downgrades from HTTPS to HTTP, it retains sensitive headers like Authorization, Cookie, Proxy-Authorization, and X-API-Key. This exposes credentials to potentially untrusted servers.

Detection Guidance

Detect Apache Juneau RestClient instances using credential header leakage during redirects. Check for HTTP clients configured to follow redirects without stripping sensitive headers like Authorization or Cookie. Inspect network traffic for cross-origin redirects where credentials are forwarded. Verify if applications use Juneau versions before 9.2.1.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could intercept or misuse credentials sent during redirects. This could lead to unauthorized access to systems, data breaches, or impersonation of users. The impact depends on the privileges of the exposed credentials.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements that mandate protection of sensitive data, such as GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Exposure of credentials may lead to unauthorized access, triggering non-compliance penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Juneau to version 9.2.1 or later to fix the issue. If using a custom HttpClient, disable automatic redirects or manually strip credential headers during cross-origin redirects.
