Description

Improper Neutralization of CRLF Sequences in HTTP Headers ('HTTP Response Splitting') vulnerability in Apache Juneau. The Apache Juneau REST server passed response header values and redirect targets to the servlet container unchecked. An application that sets a response header or redirect target from request data could let a remote client inject header lines (where the servlet container does not itself reject CR/LF) or redirect users to an arbitrary external site. The framework itself does not build headers or redirects from request data; exposure depends on application code. This issue affects Apache Juneau: through 9.2.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 9.2.1, which fixes the issue. Header values are now sanitized by default; applications that build redirect targets from request data must also switch from sendRedirect() to the new sendSafeRedirect().

CWE ID Description
CWE-113 The product receives data from an HTTP agent/component (e.g., web server, proxy, browser, etc.), but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes CR and LF characters before the data is included in outgoing HTTP headers.

Executive Summary

This is an HTTP Response Splitting vulnerability in Apache Juneau where response header values or redirect targets are passed to the servlet container without proper sanitization. If an application uses request data to set these values, a remote attacker could inject CR/LF characters to manipulate HTTP headers or redirect users to malicious sites.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect Apache Juneau applications for improper handling of HTTP headers or redirects built from user input. Check if applications use sendRedirect() with untrusted data. Review server logs for unusual header values or redirects. No specific commands are provided in the context.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to inject malicious headers, perform phishing attacks via crafted redirects, or manipulate responses to deceive users or bypass security controls. The impact depends on how the vulnerable application processes user input.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could potentially impact compliance with GDPR and HIPAA by enabling HTTP Response Splitting attacks. Such attacks may lead to unauthorized data exposure, session hijacking, or phishing attacks, which could violate data protection requirements under GDPR (e.g., Article 32 on security of processing) and HIPAA (e.g., safeguards for protected health information).

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Juneau to version 9.2.1 or later. Ensure header values are sanitized by default and applications using request data for redirects switch from sendRedirect() to sendSafeRedirect().
