Description

Control Web Panel (CWP) before webpanel_version 1.30 contains a missing authentication vulnerability that allows attackers able to reach the loopback API service to invoke root-privileged API routes without presenting an access token. Attackers can access endpoints such as /v1/restoredatabase/, /generaluser/, /last_access/, /valid_user/, /valid_token/, and /user_panel_dashboard/ to perform unauthorized actions with root privileges.

Executive Summary

Control Web Panel (CWP) before version 1.30 has a missing authentication vulnerability. Attackers who can access the loopback API service can call root-privileged API routes without an access token. This allows unauthorized actions with root permissions via endpoints like /v1/restoredatabase/, /generaluser/, /last_access/, /valid_user/, /valid_token/, and /user_panel_dashboard/.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Control Web Panel (CWP) API service is exposed to the network or loopback interface. Inspect logs for unauthorized access attempts to endpoints like /v1/restoredatabase/, /generaluser/, /last_access/, /valid_user/, /valid_token/, or /user_panel_dashboard/. Use tools like curl to test these endpoints locally or remotely.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to perform unauthorized actions with root privileges on the affected system. This may lead to full system compromise, data theft, or manipulation of critical configurations. Systems running vulnerable CWP versions are at risk if the loopback API service is reachable.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating confidentiality requirements in GDPR and HIPAA. Non-compliance may result in legal penalties, data breach notifications, and reputational damage due to loss of protected health or personal information.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Control Web Panel to version 1.30 or later to address the missing authentication flaw. If immediate upgrade is not possible, restrict access to the loopback API service by configuring firewall rules to block external connections to these endpoints.
