Description

Control Web Panel (CWP) before webpanel_version 1.30 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in the loopback API database restore route /v1/restoredatabase/, where the restoreDBBackup() handler passes an attacker-controlled file path from the POST body into a shell command without proper escaping. An attacker able to reach the route can inject arbitrary OS commands that execute as root.

Executive Summary

Control Web Panel (CWP) before version 1.30 has an OS command injection flaw in the database restore feature. The vulnerability is in the /v1/restoredatabase/ route where the restoreDBBackup() function uses attacker-controlled file paths from POST requests in shell commands without proper sanitization. This allows remote attackers to execute arbitrary OS commands with root privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check if the vulnerable route /v1/restoredatabase/ is accessible on your Control Web Panel (CWP) instance. Look for unusual database restore operations or unexpected command execution logs in system logs. Verify if the CWP version is below 1.30.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full root access on the server running CWP. This could lead to complete system compromise, data theft, installation of malware, or disruption of services. Any system with an exposed CWP instance vulnerable to this flaw is at severe risk.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability likely violates compliance requirements for data protection and security. GDPR requires adequate security measures to protect personal data; a root-level breach would indicate failure to implement such measures. HIPAA mandates strict access controls and audit mechanisms; unauthorized root access would compromise compliance. Organizations affected may face regulatory penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Control Web Panel to version 1.30 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the /v1/restoredatabase/ endpoint via firewall rules or disable the API route temporarily. Monitor for any signs of exploitation.
