Description

Control Web Panel (CWP) before webpanel_version 1.16 contains a SQL injection vulnerability in the loopback API authentication gate access_token(), which connects to MySQL as root and interpolates attacker-controlled values directly into its query. Attackers can inject SQL through the authorization_code and client_id parameters to read arbitrary database contents and forge the authentication result, bypassing the API's authentication check.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a SQL injection flaw in Control Web Panel (CWP) versions before 1.16. It exists in the loopback API's authentication function, which connects to the MySQL database as the root user. Attackers can exploit it by injecting malicious SQL code through parameters like authorization_code and client_id to manipulate database queries.

Detection Guidance

Check for SQL injection attempts in logs by searching for unusual authorization_code or client_id parameters in API requests to Control Web Panel's loopback API. Monitor MySQL root access logs for unexpected queries or connections from the web server.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to read arbitrary database contents and forge authentication results. They could bypass security controls, access sensitive data, or manipulate the system by executing unauthorized SQL commands. The impact includes potential data breaches and unauthorized system access.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR and HIPAA due to unauthorized data access or exposure. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Control Web Panel to version 1.16 or later to patch the SQL injection flaw. Temporarily restrict network access to the loopback API endpoint until patched. Review and sanitize all user inputs in authentication parameters.
