Description

Control Web Panel (CWP) before webpanel_version 1.16 contains an OS command injection vulnerability in the loopback API password change route /newpass/, which runs as root. An attacker can inject arbitrary OS commands by manipulating the POST 'user' parameter that is passed unescaped into a shell command, achieving remote code execution with root privileges.

Executive Summary

Control Web Panel (CWP) before version 1.16 has an OS command injection flaw in the loopback API password change route /newpass/. The vulnerability allows attackers to inject arbitrary OS commands via the POST 'user' parameter, which is passed unescaped into a shell command. This results in remote code execution with root privileges.

Detection Guidance

Check if your Control Web Panel (CWP) version is below 1.16 by running: curl -s http://localhost:2030 | grep -i version or checking the admin panel. Inspect network traffic for POST requests to /newpass/ with suspicious user parameter values.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to gain full control of the server running CWP, execute arbitrary commands as root, steal sensitive data, install malware, or disrupt services. Systems running vulnerable CWP versions are at high risk of compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy). Organizations may face legal penalties, reputational damage, and compliance failures due to potential data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Control Web Panel to version 1.16 or later immediately. If upgrading is not possible, restrict access to the /newpass/ endpoint via firewall rules and disable unnecessary services running as root.
