Description

Control Web Panel (CWP) before webpanel_version 1.30 contains a blind SQL injection vulnerability in an unauthenticated loopback API route that connects to MySQL as root, where the 'user' parameter is interpolated directly into a query against the oauth_clients table. Attackers can send crafted requests to the unauthenticated route (originally /user_panel_dashboard/, later /valid_token/) to perform time-based blind SQL injection and extract arbitrary database contents.

CWE ID Description
CWE-89 The product constructs all or part of an SQL command using externally-influenced input from an upstream component, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements that could modify the intended SQL command when it is sent to a downstream component. Without sufficient removal or quoting of SQL syntax in user-controllable inputs, the generated SQL query can cause those inputs to be interpreted as SQL instead of ordinary user data.

Executive Summary

Control Web Panel (CWP) before version 1.30 has a blind SQL injection flaw in an unauthenticated API route. The vulnerability allows attackers to send crafted requests to endpoints like /user_panel_dashboard/ or /valid_token/ to inject malicious SQL queries. The 'user' parameter is directly interpolated into a query against the oauth_clients table, enabling attackers to extract database contents through time-based blind SQL injection.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, monitor network traffic for requests to the affected endpoints (/user_panel_dashboard/ or /valid_token/) with unusual parameters. Check for time delays in responses, which may indicate time-based blind SQL injection attempts. Inspect MySQL logs for root-level queries originating from these endpoints.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows attackers to extract sensitive data from the database, including user credentials, tokens, or other confidential information. Since the API connects to MySQL as root, attackers could gain full access to the database contents. Unpatched systems are at risk of data breaches, unauthorized access, and potential further compromise of the server.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR, HIPAA, and other regulations due to unauthorized data access or exposure. GDPR requires protecting personal data, while HIPAA mandates safeguarding protected health information. A breach could result in legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage for organizations handling regulated data.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update Control Web Panel to version 1.30 or later to patch the vulnerability. If immediate updating is not possible, restrict access to the vulnerable endpoints via firewall rules or disable the affected API routes temporarily. Review and audit database permissions to ensure no unnecessary root-level access is granted.
