Description

Server-Side Request Forgery in ViewDataFile in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08 on all platforms allows a remote authenticated attacker holding only the base webtools permissions (OFBTOOLS_VIEW, WEBTOOLS_VIEW) to cause the server to issue arbitrary outbound HTTP requests, and an attacker additionally holding ENTITY_MAINT and DATAFILE_MAINT to read arbitrary local files via a file: URL, by supplying the DEFINITION_LOCATION or DATAFILE_LOCATION request parameter to the viewdatafile screen, because ViewDataFile.groovy dereferences both parameters as java.net.URL objects with no scheme allow-list, host filter, or egress control inside a screen action that runs before the screen's and template's permission checks are evaluated, so the fetch executes regardless of whether the requesting account is authorized to view its result. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 24.09.08, which fixes this issue.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08. It allows a remote authenticated attacker with base webtools permissions to trick the server into making arbitrary outbound HTTP requests. Attackers with additional permissions (ENTITY_MAINT and DATAFILE_MAINT) can also read local files by using a file: URL via the DEFINITION_LOCATION or DATAFILE_LOCATION parameters in the viewdatafile screen.

Detection Guidance

Check Apache OFBiz version for 24.09 before 24.09.08. Inspect server logs for unusual outbound HTTP requests or file:// URL access attempts from the viewdatafile screen. Monitor network traffic for unexpected connections to internal or external hosts.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to access internal systems, exfiltrate sensitive data, or perform unauthorized actions on behalf of the server. This includes reading local files if the attacker has the required permissions, leading to potential data breaches or further network compromise.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles or HIPAA's security requirements for protected health information. Organizations using affected versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 24.09.08 or later immediately. Temporarily restrict access to the viewdatafile screen for users with base webtools permissions until patched. Review and restrict permissions for ENTITY_MAINT and DATAFILE_MAINT roles.
