Description

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements Used in a Template Engine ('Server-Side Template Injection') in MacroScreenRenderer in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08 on all platforms allows a remote authenticated attacker holding only the two view permissions of a control-servlet webapp (e.g. CATALOG_VIEW and OFBTOOLS_VIEW on /catalog, held by OFBiz's own shipped order-entry clerk role) to execute arbitrary operating system commands as the OFBiz service account with a single GET request, by placing an apostrophe followed by FreeMarker expression source in a screen link parameter value, because renderLink concatenates link parameter values verbatim between apostrophes into an unquoted, unescaped template-source string that is compiled and evaluated at render time, allowing the injected expression to reach the allow-listed FlexibleStringExpander.expandString call and, through a runtime-assembled Groovy interpolation, unsandboxed code execution. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 24.09.08, which fixes this issue.

CWE ID Description
CWE-1336 The product uses a template engine to insert or process externally-influenced input, but it does not neutralize or incorrectly neutralizes special elements or syntax that can be interpreted as template expressions or other code directives when processed by the engine.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Template Injection vulnerability in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08. A remote authenticated attacker with limited view permissions can execute arbitrary OS commands as the OFBiz service account by injecting FreeMarker expressions into screen link parameters. The issue occurs because untrusted input is concatenated directly into a template string without proper neutralization.

Detection Guidance

Detect Apache OFBiz instances running versions before 24.09.08. Check OFBiz logs for suspicious GET requests containing apostrophes or FreeMarker expressions in screen link parameters. Inspect network traffic for unusual commands or payloads targeting OFBiz endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control over the OFBiz server, access sensitive data, modify system configurations, or disrupt operations. Since the attacker only needs basic view permissions, even low-privilege users pose a risk. The OFBiz service account typically runs with elevated privileges.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or modification, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Organizations using affected OFBiz versions may face compliance violations, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 24.09.08 or later immediately. Remove or restrict the CATALOG_VIEW and OFBTOOLS_VIEW permissions from non-admin roles. Monitor for unauthorized command execution attempts in logs.
