Code Injection in Apache OFBiz CMS Plugin

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-82960, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Description

Improper Control of Generation of Code ('Code Injection') in ModelFormField in the Apache OFBiz cms plugin before 24.09.08 on all platforms allows a remote authenticated attacker holding only CMS content-editor access to execute arbitrary operating system commands as the OFBiz process user via a single HTTP POST request, by submitting a crafted caContentIdTo parameter to EditAddContent, because the CMS screen copies that parameter into a top-level context variable that is interpolated into a form field's use-when attribute and the resulting string is passed unvalidated to GroovyUtil.eval(), whose compile-time SecureASTCustomizer sandbox does not restrict runtime reflection, allowing a payload that closes the expanded string literal and invokes java.lang.Runtime via reflection. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 24.09.08, which fixes this issue.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a code injection flaw in the Apache OFBiz CMS plugin before version 24.09.08. A remote authenticated attacker with CMS content-editor access can execute arbitrary operating system commands as the OFBiz process user by sending a crafted HTTP POST request. The attack exploits improper handling of the caContentIdTo parameter, which is copied into a context variable and interpolated into a form field's use-when attribute. This string is then passed unvalidated to GroovyUtil.eval(), bypassing the sandbox restrictions and allowing reflection-based payloads to invoke java.lang.Runtime.

Detection Guidance

Detect this vulnerability by checking the Apache OFBiz version. If it is below 24.09.08, the system is vulnerable. Use commands like 'curl -s http://<target>/ecommerce/control/buildInfo | grep version' or check the OFBiz installation directory for version files.

Impact Analysis

If you use Apache OFBiz with the vulnerable CMS plugin, an attacker could gain control of your server by executing arbitrary commands with the privileges of the OFBiz process user. This could lead to data theft, system compromise, or disruption of services. The attacker only needs basic CMS content-editor access, making it a significant risk for affected deployments.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access and data breaches, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules. Organizations may face fines, legal penalties, and reputational damage if exploited. Compliance with these regulations requires addressing such vulnerabilities promptly through patching.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 24.09.08 or later immediately. Remove or restrict CMS content-editor access for untrusted users until the upgrade is complete. Monitor network traffic for suspicious POST requests to EditAddContent endpoints.
