Executive Summary

The Tutor LMS WordPress plugin before version 4.2.0 has a flaw where quiz answers are shown to enrolled students before they submit their attempts. This happens even if the setting is configured to hide answers. Any subscriber-level user can view the correct answers prematurely.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the installed version of the Tutor LMS plugin. If it is between 1.6.4 and 4.1.3, the system is vulnerable. You can verify the version via WordPress admin panel or by inspecting plugin files for version details.

Impact Analysis

This vulnerability allows any enrolled student to see the correct answers to quiz questions before submitting their own attempts. This undermines the integrity of quizzes and assessments, potentially leading to cheating or unfair advantages in learning environments.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive quiz answers, potentially exposing personal or confidential data. For GDPR, this may violate principles of data protection and user privacy if quiz content includes personal information. For HIPAA, if the quiz involves health-related data, improper disclosure could breach confidentiality requirements.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Tutor LMS plugin to version 4.2.0 or later. If updating is not possible, disable the plugin temporarily until an update is applied. Ensure only trusted users have subscriber-level access to the WordPress site.
