Server-Side Template Injection in Apache OFBiz

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-85627, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-05

Last updated on: 2026-11-05

Assigner: Apache Software Foundation

Description

Improper Neutralization of Special Elements Used in a Template Engine ('Server-Side Template Injection') in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08 on all platforms allows a remote authenticated attacker holding only a stock non-administrative account to execute arbitrary operating system commands as the OFBiz process user, by using the updateLayoutImage event, which writes DataResource fields with no permission check, to retype an attacker-created DataResource as an FTL template evaluating its own primary key, then using the resulting FreeMarker evaluation to plant an OFBiz Form Widget whose use-when attribute runs unsandboxed Groovy. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 24.09.08, which fixes this issue.

Executive Summary

This is a Server-Side Template Injection vulnerability in Apache OFBiz 24.09 before 24.09.08. A remote authenticated attacker with a non-administrative account can execute arbitrary OS commands as the OFBiz process user by exploiting the updateLayoutImage event to retype a DataResource as an FTL template and then using FreeMarker evaluation to run unsandboxed Groovy code.

Detection Guidance

Check Apache OFBiz version with: grep -r "version" /path/to/ofbiz/release/notes.txt. If version is before 24.09.08, it is vulnerable. Look for unauthorized FTL template files in DataResource directories or suspicious Groovy code in Form Widgets.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control over the OFBiz server, execute malicious commands, steal sensitive data, or disrupt operations. Even non-admin users with minimal access could escalate privileges and compromise the entire system.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized data access or exfiltration, violating GDPR's data protection requirements and HIPAA's security rules for protected health information. Non-compliance risks include legal penalties, fines, and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache OFBiz to version 24.09.08 or later immediately. Remove or restrict access for non-administrative accounts until the update is applied. Monitor for unusual file writes or Groovy execution in OFBiz directories.
