Description

FreeScout is a self-hosted help desk and shared mailbox. Prior to 1.8.230, multiple outbound paths in Helper::downloadRemoteFile(), Helper::checkPort(), Helper::sanitizeRemoteUrl(), MailboxesController.php, and ModulesController.php do not consistently enforce a sink-level restricted-host policy. An authenticated administrator, or another authenticated user permitted to change mailbox connection settings or trigger module update or installation paths, can supply attacker-controlled URLs or hosts. The independent download and port-test sinks can reach encoded or otherwise uncovered loopback and internal addresses. The redirect-validation bypass additionally requires a configured whitelist that permits the original and final hosts while a restricted internal host appears only as an intermediate redirect hop. No unauthenticated SSRF path is established. The server can consequently contact loopback and internal services, provide a blind internal port oracle, and retrieve internal HTTP responses into application-controlled download sinks. This issue is fixed in version 1.8.230.

Executive Summary

CVE-2026-85743 is a Server-Side Request Forgery (SSRF) vulnerability in FreeScout versions before 1.8.230. It occurs because multiple functions handling outbound connections (like file downloads, port checks, and module updates) do not properly restrict access to internal or loopback network addresses. An authenticated user with administrative privileges or permission to modify mailbox settings can exploit this to make unauthorized network requests to internal services, perform blind port scans, or access restricted hosts during redirects.

Detection Guidance

Detecting this SSRF vulnerability requires checking FreeScout versions prior to 1.8.230 and reviewing network logs for unauthorized connections to loopback or internal addresses. Inspect outbound requests from Helper::downloadRemoteFile(), Helper::checkPort(), and mailbox/module update paths. Look for redirects to restricted hosts or encoded URLs.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability could allow an attacker to access internal services on your network, perform port scans to identify open services, or retrieve internal HTTP responses. This could lead to data breaches, unauthorized access to sensitive information, or further network compromise depending on your internal service configurations.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, which may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) or HIPAA (healthcare data privacy). Organizations using FreeScout must ensure proper network segmentation and apply the patch to avoid potential regulatory penalties.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade FreeScout to version 1.8.230 or later immediately. Review and restrict administrative access to mailbox settings and module updates. Monitor network traffic for outbound connections to loopback (127.0.0.0/8) or internal IP ranges. Implement strict host validation for all remote URLs.
