JupyterLab Desktop Local Server Credential Exposure via MathJax Link

Description

JupyterLab Desktop is the cross-platform desktop application for JupyterLab. Prior to 4.6.2-1, JupyterLab Desktop exposed getServerInfo to the renderer without confirming that the current page still had the local Jupyter server origin. In a local managed session using JupyterLab before 4.4.8, an attacker can place a crafted MathJax link in an untrusted notebook. If a victim opens the notebook and clicks the link, the existing renderer navigates to an attacker-controlled site while retaining access to the preload bridge. The site can call getServerInfo to obtain the local server URL and authentication token, then use the Jupyter REST API to create and trust a notebook that executes arbitrary code as the victim. Users whose environment already uses JupyterLab 4.4.8 or later are unaffected because the corrected link handling breaks the first step of the chain. This vulnerability is fixed in 4.6.2-1.

Executive Summary

JupyterLab Desktop before 4.6.2-1 has a vulnerability where the getServerInfo function is exposed to the renderer without verifying the current page's origin. This allows an attacker to craft a MathJax link in a notebook that, when clicked, navigates to an attacker-controlled site while keeping access to the preload bridge. The attacker can then retrieve the local server URL and authentication token to execute arbitrary code via the Jupyter REST API.

Detection Guidance

Check the installed version of JupyterLab Desktop. If it is below 4.6.2-1, the system is vulnerable. Run 'jupyter lab --version' to verify the version.

Impact Analysis

If you use JupyterLab Desktop before 4.6.2-1, an attacker could exploit this to gain control of your local Jupyter server. They could steal sensitive data, execute malicious code on your system, or compromise your local environment. Users with JupyterLab 4.4.8 or later are unaffected.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, potentially violating GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) by exposing personal or confidential information. Compliance may be compromised if attackers exfiltrate data or execute unauthorized actions.

Mitigation Strategies
  • Upgrade JupyterLab Desktop to version 4.6.2-1 or later.
  • Ensure JupyterLab is updated to version 4.4.8 or later to prevent the initial attack vector.
  • Avoid opening untrusted notebooks or links in JupyterLab until the update is applied.
