Executive Summary

This vulnerability in the Community Events WordPress plugin before version 1.6.0 allows unauthenticated users to retrieve details of event submissions awaiting moderation through an AJAX action named `ajax_admin_event_list`. The issue arises because there are no authorization or nonce checks in place, exposing data that is not otherwise available on the public site.

Detection Guidance

Check if your WordPress site uses the Community Events plugin version prior to 1.6.0. Inspect network traffic for AJAX calls to 'ajax_admin_event_list' without proper authorization. Look for unauthorized access logs to event submission endpoints.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to view private event submissions before they are approved, potentially exposing sensitive information like event details or user data. This could lead to privacy breaches or misuse of unpublished content.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to non-compliance with GDPR or HIPAA if it results in unauthorized access to personal or sensitive data. GDPR requires protection of personal data, and HIPAA mandates safeguards for protected health information. Exploiting this flaw may violate these regulations.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Community Events plugin to version 1.6.0 or later immediately. Review and restrict access to admin AJAX endpoints. Monitor logs for suspicious activity related to event submissions.
