Privilege Escalation in SUSE Rancher Manager

Vulnerability report for CVE-2026-88810, including description, CVSS score, EPSS score, affected products, exploitability, helpful resources, and attack-flow context.

Publication date: 2026-11-02

Assigner: SUSE

Description

A privilege escalation issue was discovered in Rancher Manager's role-based access control. The inheritedNamespacedRules field of a GlobalRole propagates permissions into named namespaces of every downstream cluster managed by the Rancher instance, but it was not subject to the privilege-escalation validation applied to the other permission-carryingΒ fields of a GlobalRole.Β As a result, a non-administrative user could be granted, through a global roleΒ  binding,Β permissions in downstream clusters that exceed the permissions that user already holds. This affected SUSE Rancher 2.15.2 only, and SUSE Rancher Webhook 0.11.0 up to 0.11.4, and 0.12.0 up to 0.12.1.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is a privilege escalation issue in Rancher Manager's role-based access control. The inheritedNamespacedRules field in GlobalRole objects propagates permissions into namespaces of downstream clusters without proper validation. This allows non-administrative users with specific permissions to gain unauthorized elevated access across downstream clusters.

Detection Guidance

Check for GlobalRole objects with inheritedNamespacedRules fields in your Rancher Manager instance. Use kubectl to list GlobalRoles and inspect their configurations for unexpected permissions propagated to downstream clusters.

Impact Analysis

An authenticated user with delegated permissions to create or update GlobalRoles and GlobalRoleBindings could exploit this to gain unauthorized access across downstream clusters. This could compromise confidentiality, integrity, and availability of resources in those clusters.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability allows unauthorized privilege escalation, which could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data. This may violate compliance requirements under GDPR (data protection) and HIPAA (health information privacy) by enabling unauthorized users to access or modify protected data.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade to rancher-webhook v0.11.4 (for Rancher v2.15.3) or v0.12.1 to enable validation of inheritedNamespacedRules permissions. Review and remove any unintended inheritedNamespacedRules entries in existing GlobalRole objects.
