Description

The WP-Members Membership Plugin plugin for WordPress is vulnerable to Stored Cross-Site Scripting via WooCommerce Checkout Multicheckbox/Multiselect Field (scalar bypass of wpmem_sanitize_array) in all versions up to, and including, 3.5.7 due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This makes it possible for authenticated attackers, with subscriber-level access and above, to inject arbitrary web scripts in pages that will execute whenever a user accesses an injected page. This is only exploitable via the WooCommerce classic checkout path, as the sibling registration, profile, and account-edit handlers implode the value before sanitization, which raises a PHP 8 TypeError on scalar input and fails closed.

Executive Summary

The WP-Members Membership Plugin for WordPress has a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability due to insufficient input sanitization and output escaping. This flaw allows authenticated attackers with subscriber-level access or higher to inject malicious scripts into pages. The vulnerability specifically affects the WooCommerce Checkout Multicheckbox/Multiselect Field and is exploitable only via the WooCommerce classic checkout path.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, inspect WordPress sites using the WP-Members Membership Plugin version 3.5.7 or lower. Check for unauthorized script injections in WooCommerce checkout pages, particularly via multicheckbox/multiselect fields. Review server logs for unusual activity or script execution in user-accessible pages.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could inject malicious scripts into your WordPress site, potentially stealing user data, session cookies, or performing actions on behalf of users. This could lead to unauthorized access, data breaches, or defacement of your website. The impact is limited to authenticated users with subscriber-level access or higher.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to data breaches, which may violate GDPR and HIPAA compliance requirements. GDPR mandates protection of personal data, while HIPAA requires safeguarding protected health information. A successful exploit could result in unauthorized access to sensitive data, leading to legal penalties and reputational damage.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the WP-Members Membership Plugin to the latest version. Remove or restrict subscriber-level access if not required. Monitor affected pages for injected scripts and audit user roles with checkout access. Consider disabling WooCommerce classic checkout temporarily if an update is delayed.
