Description

Improper Neutralization of Input During Web Page Generation ('Cross-site Scripting') vulnerability in Apache Juneau. HTML document serialization does not HTML-encode variable substitutions in the page chrome (header, nav, aside, footer and similar fields). Applications whose chrome includes request-derived variables, such as request headers, form data or path values, reflect those values unencoded, allowing cross-site scripting. The default chrome does not use request variables, so only applications that add them are affected. This issue affects Apache Juneau: through 9.2.0. Users are recommended to upgrade to version 9.2.1, which fixes the issue.

Executive Summary

This is a Cross-site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in Apache Juneau. It occurs when HTML document serialization fails to encode variable substitutions in page chrome elements like headers, navigation, or footers. If these elements include request-derived variables such as headers or form data, they are reflected without encoding, enabling attackers to inject malicious scripts.

Detection Guidance

To detect this XSS vulnerability in Apache Juneau, inspect web applications using the library for custom chrome templates that include request-derived variables like headers, form data, or path values. Check if these variables are reflected without HTML encoding in header, nav, aside, footer, or similar fields.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could exploit this to execute arbitrary JavaScript in a victim's browser, potentially stealing session cookies, redirecting users to malicious sites, or performing actions on their behalf. This could lead to data theft, account compromise, or defacement of web pages.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. Organizations may face compliance penalties, reputational damage, and legal consequences if exploited.

Mitigation Strategies

Upgrade Apache Juneau to version 9.2.1 or later, which fixes the issue. If upgrading is not immediately possible, review and modify custom chrome templates to ensure all request-derived variables are properly HTML-encoded before being reflected in the output.
