Description

A flaw was found in the idp-auto-link authenticator of the keycloak-services component, which handles user identity federation. The issue occurs when Keycloak automatically links an incoming identity from an external provider to an existing local account based on an email address without verifying if the provider has validated that email. This can allow an attacker to take over a victim's account by using a matching unverified email address at a brokered provider.

Executive Summary

This vulnerability is in Keycloak's idp-auto-link authenticator, which handles user identity federation. It allows automatic linking of an external identity to a local account based solely on an email match without verifying if the external provider has validated the email. An attacker can exploit this by using an unverified email address at a brokered provider to take over a victim's account.

Impact Analysis

An attacker could gain full control of your account, including changing your email and password. This could lead to unauthorized access to sensitive data, privilege escalation, or further attacks within the system. The impact is significant due to the high CVSS score of 8.8.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to personal data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in non-compliance, legal penalties, and loss of trust due to compromised user accounts and data breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Disable the idp-auto-link authenticator in Keycloak configuration to prevent automatic linking of identities based on unverified emails. Review and update authentication policies to enforce email verification before account linking. Monitor for suspicious account activities or unauthorized access attempts.
