Executive Summary

This is an Insecure Direct Object Reference (IDOR) vulnerability in the Secure Custom Fields WordPress plugin before version 6.9.8. It allows users with contributor-level access or higher to modify bidirectional relationship fields on posts, users, or terms they do not have permission to edit directly. The plugin fails to verify if a user can edit the target object before updating the relationship field.

Detection Guidance

To detect this vulnerability, check the version of the Secure Custom Fields plugin installed on your WordPress site. If it is below 6.9.8, the site is vulnerable. You can verify the version by inspecting the plugin files or using WordPress admin panel.

Impact Analysis

An attacker with contributor-level access could manipulate relationships between objects, such as linking their own content to posts or users they should not control. This could lead to unauthorized changes in content visibility, user associations, or term relationships, potentially causing data integrity issues or misinformation.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could violate compliance requirements that mandate strict access controls and data integrity, such as GDPR's principle of least privilege or HIPAA's safeguards for protected health information. Unauthorized modifications to relationships may lead to unauthorized data exposure or integrity breaches.

Mitigation Strategies

Immediately update the Secure Custom Fields plugin to version 6.9.8 or later to patch the vulnerability. If updating is not possible, consider disabling the plugin temporarily until the update can be applied.
