Description

The Secure Custom Fields WordPress plugin before 6.9.8 does not sanitize a persisted field definition before emitting part of it as an HTML attribute name, allowing a user able to configure its fields to store a payload that executes as JavaScript in the browser of any user who views a page rendering the affected field, which on multisite lets a site administrator who lacks the unfiltered_html capability inject script into other users' sessions.

Executive Summary

This is a stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) vulnerability in the Secure Custom Fields WordPress plugin before version 6.9.8. It occurs because the plugin does not properly sanitize field definitions before using them as HTML attribute names. An authenticated user with administrative privileges but lacking the unfiltered_html capability can inject malicious JavaScript payloads into field definitions.

Detection Guidance

Check if the Secure Custom Fields WordPress plugin version is below 6.9.8. Use commands like 'wp plugin list' in WordPress CLI or inspect the plugin directory for version details. Look for unusual JavaScript payloads in field definitions via database queries or plugin configuration pages.

Impact Analysis

If exploited, this vulnerability allows the injected JavaScript to execute in the browsers of any user viewing a page with the affected field. In multisite environments, a site administrator can compromise other users' sessions. The impact includes potential theft of session cookies, unauthorized actions on behalf of users, and further exploitation of user accounts.

Compliance Impact

This vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access to user data, violating GDPR's data protection principles and HIPAA's security requirements. It may result in data breaches, unauthorized processing of personal data, and failure to maintain data integrity and confidentiality.

Mitigation Strategies

Update the Secure Custom Fields plugin to version 6.9.8 or later immediately. Remove or disable the plugin if updates are unavailable. Review field definitions for suspicious JavaScript payloads and restrict administrative access to trusted users only.
